What to Expect: Newborn Sessions

Firstly I would like to say how thrilled I am that you have chosen me to photograph your precious little baby/babies! Newborn sessions are my favorite! I love capturing those tiny details in babies and providing images that will last a lifetime, and remind parents of just how small their babies were and how quickly they change! Newborn sessions are longer than normal sessions and require a lot of time, planning and patience on the photographers part as well as the parents. New parents can be overwhelmed with what to expect when their new baby is being photographed, so I have written this to help my clients know what to expect and hopefully become a little more comfortable with the process of how i do newborn portrait sessions.  And I need to stress the importance of remaining very calm during the session, even during the times baby gets upset, or cries.   After all is said, if you still have questions feel free to message me!

Preparing for your session:
1. Once you've contacted me about photographing your newborn, we can set up a tentative date based around your due date. Because babies typically come on their own time, you will need to contact me once you have delivered and we can set up the actual session. Babies are best photographed within the first 5-10 days of birth as they are still very sleepy, can be easily posed, baby acne hasn't appeared yet and any signs of jaundice have faded as well. So be sure to contact me as soon as possible to book your session.
2. My newborn sessions typically take three to five hours.  Because of this I typically schedule newborn sessions in the morning, around ten. Babies also tend to be sleepier at this time of day. I am not shooting the entire 3-6 hours. Much of this time is spent switching blankets and props, getting baby fed or diaper changed/cleaning up messes and soothing baby into poses. A fussy or wide awake baby who is unwilling to fall into a deep sleep can also effect the length of the shoot.

3. I shoot newborn sessions at my home, in my small "studio".   This is where I have a posing beanbag set up, and other setups for posing and photographing the baby.  I have props, blankets and everything we will need for the shoot.  However, you are welcome to bring any items you would like to incorporate.. such as sentimental items or things you have picked up, bows, etc.

4. Babies are best photographed on a nice full tummy, so shortly before you start to pack up to head over to my home, go ahead and feed baby, if possible, undress baby down to a diaper (cloth if you have it), put baby in car seat, and swaddle with a warm blanket to keep baby cozy on the ride over.  This way I can easily get baby out, and not wake him/her and start shooting right away.  If it is too cold out, or if you would prefer not to do that, please dress baby in a button down or outfit with snaps.. nothing over the head.

5. PLEASE don't forget to bring diapers (at least 5), wipes, MILK, PACIFIER (even if baby doesn't take it), and accessories/items you would like to incorporate in the shots..
During your session:

1 .Some parents want to help me, and be right by their baby during the session. Although I completely understand this, I encourage you to sit back, relax, and even take a nap if you'd like. A lot of the parents I work with love this opportunity to catch up on some sleep. I ask them to remain in the sitting area, which is close to where I’m shooting and where they can still see their baby. The reason for seating the parents, especially the mother, a bit farther away from where the baby is located is because a baby can smell mommy, which might trigger the need to eat more often, even though the baby does not necessarily need to. This can lead to the baby stirring and possibly waking up. For this reason, I try to keep the baby from being too close to the mom unless the baby needs to feed or to assist me.
  • It’s not a matter of if the baby will pee, but when the baby will pee!
2. Newborns love to be warm, and since they will be naked for the majority of their session my studio area will be a temperature of 80-85 degrees. I will be using a white noise app on my phone to keep baby calm.  Please dress light and bring snacks.

3. I like to start off the session with posing baby on the beanbag using a variety of backdrops and small props (bows/hats). After that we can move on to family shots and other posed shots.

After your session:
I will go through all of the photos from the session and pick the very best images to edit and share. Depending on the session, the number of images will vary.
After editing a few images I will post a sneak peek on my Facebook page, usually 5-10 images.
All of your edited images will be presented to you on a disc sent by mail. The cost of the CD is included in your session fee. Please allow for two to three weeks for the CD to be sent out.
I will provide  you with a printing release so that you may get your photos printed at the lab of your choice. You will need this with you when getting images printed.
Thank you again for choosing Lori Bee Photography as your newborn photographer!  I am excited and honored to photograph your family, and for our session together.
~Lori
